A massive earthquake struck off Indonesia early this morning. A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the northern Molucca Sea on Thursday morning (April 2), sending shockwaves through eastern Indonesia. This caused widespread panic across the region, prompting a tsunami warning for neighboring countries. One person was killed in the quake.

According to Reuters, the earthquake struck at approximately 7:48 a.m. local time. Its epicenter was located approximately 580 kilometers south of the Philippines coast and 1,000 kilometers from Sabah, Malaysia. The report further stated that the tremor was felt for 10 to 20 seconds in Bitung City and Ternate City. Tsunami waves were detected at several monitoring stations within 30 minutes of the earthquake.
The United States Geological Survey further reported that the earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles). The US Tsunami Warning System said that dangerous tsunami waves were expected along the coasts of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia within a 1,000-kilometer radius of the epicenter.
Indonesia’s national disaster agency said in a statement, “Although the situation is relatively minor, vigilance is still needed due to the possibility of aftershocks.” The agency added that initial reports indicate minor to moderate damage to several homes and a church. A detailed damage assessment is currently underway.
