Narmadapuram. Serious questions have once again arisen regarding the safety and monitoring of tigers in the Satpura Tiger Reserve. Due to alleged negligence by management, the 24-day-old carcass of a four-and-a-half-year-old male tiger was found in the Chhatiam General Forest Division beat near the border of Chhindwara district. Shockingly, Tiger Reserve officials neglected to care for the tiger for so long.

This tiger was brought from Bandhavgarh and fitted with a radio collar to monitor its movements. On March 19th, when WWF granted permission to remove the collar ID, STR management swung into action. When the team arrived at the location, they discovered the tiger had died 24 days earlier. To destroy evidence, poachers had burned the radio collar to prevent it from receiving signals.

Investigations have revealed that the tiger was poisoned to death. The incident was discovered when a search team found a dead bull at the scene. With the help of a dog squad, the team reached the farm of the main accused, Udesing, where the tiger’s carcass was recovered. It is reported that the accused also illegally cultivates opium in the area.

According to STR Field Director Rakhi Nanda, five people (Bishanlal, Manohar, Kailal, and Manaksingh), including the main accused, Udesing, have been arrested and sent to jail. However, this incident has exposed the reserve’s monitoring system. Questions arise: why did the tiger with a collar remain missing for 24 days, and why did the management not notice? Locals allege that officials are simply making excuses and shirking their responsibility.
