Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has taken a strong stance on the acute shortage of judges in the courts and the underrepresentation of women judges. He has written to the Chief Justices of 25 High Courts across the country, directing them to fill vacant judge positions as soon as possible. He also called for special attention to be given to the promotion of women judges to ensure diversity on benches. He highlighted the vacancies in the judiciary and urged them to increase the representation of women on benches.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has written to the Chief Justices of the High Courts to expedite the filling of judicial vacancies. According to sources, the CJI wrote to the Chief Justices of 25 High Courts last week.

The CJI asked the collegiums of the High Courts to widen their scope of selection and also consider the names of women advocates from their respective states who are practising in the apex court.

The CJI has previously raised the issue of underrepresentation of women judges. He has also urged Chief Justices not to delay the collegium’s recommendations and to take steps to fill vacancies before they actually arise.

At a ceremony on March 8, CJI Surya Kant advocated for further institutional reforms in the judiciary to bring more women into the legal field. He said that the collegiums of high courts should consider appointing qualified women lawyers as judges, not as an exception, but as a general rule.

Citing positive statistics, the CJI noted that several women are currently serving as Chief Justices in various High Courts. The Punjab and Haryana High Court currently has 18 women judges. The Madras and Bombay High Courts also have approximately a dozen women judges.
