In Jabalpur, a 50 year old labourer was killed when a wall of a run-down irrigation department building collapsed on him during the demolition exercise. The dead, who was named Dhaniram Jharia, was reported to have been summoned to remove bricks in the vacant building when the accident happened.
Reports suggest that the weakened wall collapsed and fell on the labourer who was working at the site. Local residents hurried to the location and removed him out of the rubble. As he was being rescued, he was still breathing yet, he died of his injuries in a short time.
The occurrence led to the anger of the family members and villagers of the victim who came to the location and organized a protest accusing negligence and insufficient measures to secure the site. The strains were momentarily heated up when the crowd called upon the culprits to take responsibility of the people who gave out the work in such a risky building.
Officials of the police came to the scene on time to calm the situation and promised the protesters that a proper and extensive investigation would be held. A case has been registered and a post-mortem examination of the body has been sent in order to establish the cause of the accident and assign blame.
The government has embarked on an intensive investigation on the events of the collapse, such as the issue of whether adequate safety measures were observed. This accident has once again brought about the issue of poor working conditions at the deserted or poorly maintained government buildings.
