The current head coach of the Indian men cricket team Gautam Gambhir is a man who has taken the matter to court by initiating a civil suit in Delhi High Court, of the alleged abuse of his identity by use of AI-generated and manipulated content online. The petition is addressed to several persons and organizations that are accused of producing and spreading deepfakes videos and fake content in his name, image, and voice.
Gambhir has requested 2.5 crore in his plea and full protection of his personality and publicity rights. The case is filed against 16 defendants, including individual users of the social media, and such large platforms as Meta, X, and Google. E-commerce websites such as Amazon and Flipkart have also been added on the list, allegedly letting unauthorised merchandise that is related to his name.
This has also been sought by Gambhir legal team who have petitioned the court to grant interim ad-interim injunction on ex-parte basis in order to compel the court to direct the immediate removal of such a misleading content before a formal hearing can be held. The petition singles out a coordinated campaign of impersonation that allegedly worsened in late 2025.
The cricketer said his identity had been weaponised to bring misinformation and raise revenue without his permission. Some of the examples mentioned include fake videos purporting his resignation and saying controversial things about Indian players.
The case highlights the increasing worries of the unethical use of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology posing meaningful questions on digital rights, liability and legal safeguarding of individuals in the public eye in the new digital environment.
