Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy has also encouraged the Telangana government to enter into an agreement with National Thermal Power Corporation through signing a power purchase agreement (PPA) to meet the rapidly increasing electricity demand in the state.

In a letter to the Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Kishan Reddy pointed out that the second stage of the thermal power project undertaken by NTPC in Ramagundam district of Peddapalli was able to help the state greatly in terms of electricity requirements. The three-unit project of 800 MW each is likely to enhance power supply and avail high dependable and at affordable costs to the consumers.

The appeal is issued when the electricity consumption in Telangana is at an all-time high. The state, according to Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, the Deputy Chief Minister, has recently experienced the largest peak demand of 18,139 MW at 11:01 am on March 3. The boom is an indication of the fast economic growth of the state especially in information technology, pharmaceutical, manufacturing and irrigation sectors.

The power demand at Telangana has been steadily increasing over the last few years with the latest highs of 15,623 MW in March 2024 and 17,162 MW in March 2025. According to Vikramarka, the state government has enhanced its power infrastructure by advanced planning, enhanced grid systems and management of energy to handle the future summer needs.

Kishan Reddy also added that the power demand in Telangana would continue to increase in the next few decades. According to him, the state might have to increase its thermal power capacity by approximately 5,0006,000 MW to keep its grid stable and to supply future energy requirements.
