The Indian youths have been rated the 60 th out of 84 countries in a 2025 Mind Health Quotient (MHQ) test by the US-based Sapien Labs Global Mind Health study, a factor that has raised concerns regarding the Indian youths mental health. The results indicate that at the age of 18 34 years, the Indians were not only doing poorly than their counterparts in the international system, but also performing very lower than the older Indians at 55 years and above.

The report gave an average of about 33 as the MHQ score in the youth in India indicating that they are in the Distressed or Struggling category. However, Indians who were aged more than 55 recorded an average of near 100, which was classified as Managing or Succeeding. The position of older Indians was 49 th in the world, which means that they are comparatively more mentally resilient and stable.

Tara Thiagarajan, founder and chief scientist of Sapien Labs, observed that the score of mind health in adults who have reached 55 years of age has not changed since measurements commenced in 2019, but in younger adults there was a acute drop in 2020 during a pandemic and it has not yet been restored. This pattern of young adults performing poorly as compared to older groups was common in all countries that were surveyed.

Much of Sub-Saharan Africa had reported the relatively better results in mind health in the form of Ghana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Tanzania. Otherwise, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, and China were among the countries that are close to the bottom.

The research used more than one million internet-enabled participants in 84 countries in 2024 and 2025 and determined the impact of contemporary lifestyle trends on the development of youth mental health across the world.
