On Friday afternoon, a powerful earthquake shook Kolkata causing strong tremors in the city causing panic among the inhabitants. The shock was experienced in a number of neighbourhoods as people hurried out of homes, offices, and commercial buildings as a precaution measure.
According to eyewitnesses, ceiling fans moved, furniture trembled and the high-rise buildings were noticeably vibrating during several seconds. A lot of people were in the open areas and streets, fearing the activity of aftershocks. The tremors reportedly also felt in the adjacent districts but the intensity was different in different areas.
Law-enforcement agencies are in the process of evaluating the circumstances, and there were no reports on significant destruction and victims at the moment. Emergency services were put on the alert and the disaster management teams are keeping a close eye on the situation. Authorities have called on people to stay composed and pay attention to safety precautions that have been given by the local government.
