On Tuesday, a huge security alert was sounded when major security alarm was raised after the Chhattisgarh High Court received a bomb threat by email which caused panic and increased security measures in the whole area of the premises. Law enforcement officials promptly moved into action and bomb clearance units and guards carried out searches in the courtroom.
Policemen confirmed that this threat was electronically received and the police and other security agencies responded promptly. To avoid such an eventuality, there has been a considerable tightening of security in the Bilaspur based High Court. The premises has been put on high alert, more police are being deployed and free movements and entry points are being kept a tight check.
This is by no means the first occasion that courts in the state would obtain such threats. Similar bomb threat messages had also been received in the past in district courts in Rajnandgaon, Janjgir-Champa and Jagdalpur. In such cases wide scale searches had been conducted and the threats proved to be hoaxes.
Though there was some false alarm in earlier times, today officials are taking the threat seriously. According to senior police officers, they cannot afford to risk their lives when it comes to judicial institutions and all the required measures were being taken to keep judges, lawyers, staff, and visitors safe.
Relevant investigations are being carried out to trace the source of the threatening email and those who sent it. Cybercrime professionals have also been engaged to help in tracking the one sending. In the meantime, the court proceedings are being held in high security due to the high alertness of the officials.
