Cyclone Yaas Updates: Trails of Storm Leaves States Devastated; Jharkhand and Neighbours Face the Ire

India: Heavy rain lashed northern Odisha on May 27 as cyclone Yaas dissolute into a deep depression over south Jharkhand and adjoining north interior Orissa. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the savaging storm moved north-westwards and lay centred over south Jharkhand and neighbourhood, about 70 km west-southwest of Jamshedpur and 70 km south south-east of Ranchi. 

Nearly 201 relief camps were set up and 596 people were evacuated in the low-lying areas of West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand. Additionally, one team, consisting of 24 Jawan’s of the NDRF, was activated in Kamardungi, informed Ananya Mittal, District Collector, West Singhbhum.

CM of Orissa, Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday (May 26) promised to provide relief materials to all the families affected in the cyclonic storm. Reviewing the post-cyclone situation, the Chief Minister announced to provide seven days’ relief materials to people of 128 villages that have been severely hit by the natural calamity. He directed all responsible authorities to restore Transportation and Power supply expeditiously. Additionally, SRC Pradeep Jena informed that the local panchayat bodies and block-level officials will supply food to the cyclone inflicted families. 

Meanwhile, Indian Railways has begun the restoration of its services with the survey of the stations.  According to the Railway Ministry, the restoration work by the East Coast Railway zone is currently in full swing after Cyclone Yaas. Indian Railways claimed that there has been no major damage on the rail track, signal, OHE, quarters from any place. 

Earlier, on Wednesday, the IMD informed that Cyclone Yaas would reach Jharkhand on Thursday morning. As of 5:30 am on Thursday, the deep depression lay centred over south Jharkhand and the neighbourhood.
