The police officials said on Monday that their forces had retrieved two balloons loaded with currency notes of the USA and Pakistan in the Akhnoor sector along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. The governments have initiated a probe to establish the source of the balloons and also to determine whether the currency notes attached are authentic or fake.
The discovery has generated security concerns because of the sensitive location on LoC according to Jammu and Kashmir Police. According to the officials the forensic analysis of the recovered money is in progress and also more investigations are being carried out to determine whether the case is connected to some cross-border activity or not.
The discovery follows a day after another balloon with the name of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was discovered within an Air Force technical site in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Gaurav Singh, a case has been registered on February 12 at the police station of Shahganj and this was based on the complaint of Indian Air Force. The aircraft-shaped balloon, which was green and white in colour, had a thread affixed but no suspicious device and material were found.
In recent weeks, there has been a high alert in security agencies as there have been reports of drone intrusions along the India Pakistan border. Suspected drones were seen in January in Jaisalmer district in Rajasthan, and in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army chief had later on mentioned that the issue regarding the drones activities had been discussed with the military authorities of Pakistan and that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is still sensitive and under control.
Also, authorities confirmed a recent violation of ceasefire along the LoC in Kupwara district, which also increased the tension in the area.
