New Delhi: Delhi’s National Zoological Park (Zoo) is going to start the facility of adopting animals for the general public from March. According to the information, under this scheme, people will be able to adopt an animal for a day on their birthday, wedding anniversary or other special occasions. This will not mean that they will be able to take the animal home, but they will be able to bear the expenses of its food, care and protection on that day and will be able to become its “guardian symbolically”.

Under this scheme at Delhi’s National Zoological Park, the adoption fee is determined based on the animal’s size, diet, and care costs. According to information, the fee is approximately 500 rupees for a small animal like a deer, and up to 50,000 rupees for a large animal like a tiger. This amount will cover the animal’s food and care for that day. In return, the adopter may also receive benefits such as a certificate or special mention (as per rules). This initiative is being launched to increase public participation in wildlife conservation and develop sensitivity towards animals.

According to officials with Delhi’s National Zoological Park, the proposal for short-term (one-day) adoptions is expected to be approved by the end of this month and could be implemented in March. Officials explained that the one-day adoption fee will be determined based on each animal’s annual adoption rate. This means that the one-day fee will be proportionate to the annual adoption fee for an animal. For example, if the annual adoption fee for an animal is ₹50,000, the one-day adoption fee will be approximately ₹500. This initiative will allow people to engage with wildlife conservation on special occasions and will also provide additional support to the zoo for animal care.
