Kerala Police are investigating a case of a pair of elephant tusks stolen in an Indian Army camp in Pangode, a high security neighbourhood in Thiruvananthapuram. The case surfaced when a complaint was launched by the Army officials on Wednesday, and the Poojappura police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against this on the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), such as theft and house trespass in sensitive areas.

The tusks were also kept in the mess of the officers in the military camp and were found missing between February 11 and 12, according to the police sources. On Wednesday, a programme was reportedly being done in the camp, where outside staff were admitted to do lighting and sound preparations. The investigators believe that during this event, theft might have taken place.

Authorities indicated that the camp is a highly guarded defence base and, therefore, the theft was of special concern. Law enforcers are also viewing CCTV footage inside and outside the facility to get a clue of possible suspects. The police have not eliminated the insider element where no arrests have yet been made.

The stolen tusks are even estimated to be worth about 2 crore in the open market, which makes the case severer. In the meantime, the Army has initiated a similar inquiry internally to find how the breach had been effected and who did it.

One of the important military bases in Kerala is the Pangode Army station which is a part of the Southern Command of the Indian Army.
