Vijay, an actor and a politician, created a new political controversy in Tamil Nadu on Friday when he asked voters to accept cash being given by other political parties in the upcoming Assembly elections, but vote for the whistle, the election symbol of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Speaking at a large gathering in Seelanaickenpatti in Salem, Vijay said that the culture of cash-for-votes would be over with his introduction into mainstream politics.
He made a sharp attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), without mentioning them by name, saying that both of them thrived on alliances to secure electoral victory. He asserted that his recent attempt to share power with allies on power-sharing had gone off like a political bomb over the entire State, shaking the existing parties. The concept, according to Vijay, has led to internal tension among the competing coalitions especially when Chief Minister, M. K. Stalin was reported to have refused to share power with the congress.
According to Vijay, alliances enable the parties to win elections, but also rule is closely knit to a party that has one leadership. Positioning TVK as a 100 per cent pure force, he put his party in contesting Tamil Nadu that had a long history of being a bipolar political setting ahead of the April-May elections.
Vijay also questioned the announcement of a 2000 rupees summer special package by the State government along with the early release of funds under Kalaignar Women Rights Scheme claiming that the decision was made to counter the growing popularity of his party among women voters.
