The Director General of Police of Meghalaya Idashisha Nongrang has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the killing of at least 31 people in the devastating illegal coal mine explosion in the East Jaintia Hills district. The explosion happened on the 5 th of February, in one of the mines under illegal operation in Thangsku point of Mynsngat village, Khliehriat. The most recent victim was reported in a hospital at Guwahati when an injured laborer died of his wounds.
By the official order, DGP stated that the SIT is established with the aim of the fair, unbiased, and timely investigation of the situation that caused the tragedy. Vivekanand S. Rathore, a deputy inspector general of police will lead the nine-member team. It has been mandated to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion, investigations on any negligence and also violation of the court directives and National Green Tribunal (NGT) directives on the illegal mining in the area.
The Meghalaya SIT will also measure the violations of the safety norms and will correct the responsibility of the persons whose responsibilities is to work on the illegal mine. The authorities have underscored that the investigation should be done promptly so as the victims and their families can be adequately offered justice.
On February 9, the official announcement of the search and rescue operation was canceled after professional teams had determined that no one was trapped in the drilled mine any longer. In the meantime, the Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has set up a separate judicial inquiry commission, which would further investigate the incident and establish accountability at every level.
