As counting nears completion, by 9:20 am, Tarique Rahman-led BNP has secured 208 seats while the Jammat-e-Islami and its 11 allies has managed to get 69 seats, according to Bangladesh daily. The Election Commission’s confirmation is still pending, as counting is underway for 15 constituencies. Meanwhile, the 60-year-old Tarique Rahman is set to take oath as Prime Minister on Saturday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his congratulations to Rahman and the BNP for a “decisive victory”. “I convey my warm congratulations to Mr Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh,” the prime minister said in a post on X.

Bangladesh witnessed a steep decline in border and internal security, with a rise in illegal migration (and the fallout on domestic politics, particularly before the Bengal and Assam elections) and continuing anti-Hindu sentiments since the ouster of former premier Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India on August 5, 2023, following a student uprising against her regime. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday expressed gratitude to India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for recognising the outcome of Bangladesh’s general elections.

Nazrul Islam Khan, BNP’s polls coordination committee chief reacted to PM Modi’s congratulatory message BNP, saying, “We hope that the relationship between two neighbouring countries and the people of these two countries will be strengthened. We thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for congratulating our leader, Tarique Rahman. It’s great that a democratic country is supposed to recognise the verdict of the people,” reported.
