A political change occurred in the civic administration of Mumbai as the mayors and deputy mayors of the city, BJP corporator Ritu Tawde and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Ghadi were unopposed. The rise of Tawde to the top position terminates the 25 years rule of the Thackeray family in the wealthiest civic institution in India.
Ritu Tawde, 52, is the representative of ward 132, Ghatkopar. Her first political venture was in Congress but she later joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2012 when she was elected as a corporator first. She has since continued to be a go-getter in local politics and party matters.
The civic polls which took place on January 15 on the BMC as well as 28 other municipal bodies in Maharashtra were followed by the mayoral election. The BJP in the BMC became the largest party and won 89 seats and the Shiv Sena party led by Eknath Shinde got 29 seats, reinforcing the ruling Mahayuti alliance leadership in the city.
Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde, the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, respectively, attended the BMC headquarters during the elections. After talking to the reporters, Fadnavis said she was pleased with the result and that Tawde would represent the city of Mumbai well as she has experience and knowledge about the issues of the people. He also mentioned that the government would realize the vision of the founder of Shiv Sena Balasaheb Thackeray, particularly in the 100 th year of his birth.
Shinde was thankful to the voters as they helped the Mahayuti alliance and stressed the government on development. According to him, the new leadership would strive to uplift the infrastructure, slum dwellers housing, better roads, water supplies and make Mumbai drug free.
