The Supreme Court has expressed deep displeasure over illegal mining in the Aravalli Hills despite a moratorium. During the hearing on Wednesday, Chief Justice Surya Kant stated that this would create an irreversible situation.

The bench, comprising CJI Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi, announced that an expert committee would be formed to prevent mining. Furthermore, the court obtained a guarantee from the Rajasthan government that no mining would be permitted in the Aravalli region.

It should be noted that in an order issued on November 20th, the Supreme Court authorized mining on hills smaller than 100 meters. This sparked a nationwide controversy regarding the definition of 100 meters. On November 29th, it stayed its own order. It also issued notices to the central government and the four Aravalli-speaking states (Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi, and Haryana) seeking responses on the issue, while directing the formation of an expert committee to investigate the matter.

During the hearing, the bench stated, “This is not a competitive lawsuit, but rather the objective is to conserve the Aravalli range.” The bench added, “Given the points outlined in the suo motu order of December 29, 2025, an independent expert body may be required to re-examine the scientific, environmental, geological, and legal aspects of the Aravalli definition.”
