NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, whose last 10-day space mission stretched into nine-and-a-half months on the International Space Station (ISS), has retired after 27 years. The retirement, announced by NASA on Tuesday, came into effect just after last Christmas, on December 27, 2025.
Sunita Williams, who reached India, met astronaut Kalpana Chawla’s mother, Sanyogita Chawla and sister Deepa in Delhi. Williams said that coming to India feels like a homecoming for her, because her father was from Jhulasan village in Mehsana district of Gujarat.
Speaking at an event in IIT Delhi, Sunita Williams said that there’s a space race going on, but it’s a race about how we return to the Moon. We want to go there in a sustainable way, so that rules are set and countries can work together, just like in Antarctica.
Williams said that space travel is a team sport and countries need to work together. She also stressed that commercialization of space is essential, as it increases employment and innovation opportunities in areas such as new technology, satellites, space experiments, and 3D printing. When asked about going to the moon, she jokingly said, “I want to go to the moon, but my husband would kill me. It’s time to return home and hand over responsibility. The next generation must carve out its place in space exploration.”
