Washington: The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) of the U.S. has issued the aviation safety warnings called Notes to Airmen (NOTAMs) over airspace areas in Mexico, several Central American countries, Ecuador and Colombia, and parts of the eastern Pacific Ocean. The advisories also become effective on Friday and are to last 60 days in duration, highlighting potential dangers of military actions and the interference with navigation systems.

The FAA alerts encourage pilots and airlines in the prevailing areas to be cautious of the supposed risks to aircraft at all levels, such as the overflight and arrival and leave parts of the flight. The alerts are of concern with regard to potential military interventions and poor GPS signals that may be a navigational risk to civil aviation.

This warning is in the context of an increase in tensions in the area and the strengthening of the U.S. military presence in the south of the Caribbean. At the beginning of January, the U.S. military was able to carry out a major operation in Venezuela that led to the arrest of the Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were taken to the United States, charged under federal statutes. The U.S. operations against supposed traffickers in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific have involved a series of strikes that the administration has said were meant to fight drug trafficking.

Besides Venezuela, President Donald Trump has openly increased the threat of additional military actions in the area, including criminal organisations and other targets. Threats against Mexican cartels have also been mentioned as a part of recent rhetoric, and this has attracted international attention and local concern.

FAA emphasised that these kinds of NOTAMs are regularly issued in those regions where hostilities or major military operations are likely to affect the security of aircraft flown. In the meantime, the Mexican government has also reacted to the advisory by affirming that it has not been affected by the advisory at the national airspace, and that the precautionary notice indicated by the FAA is directed more to the U.S. operators.

The situation will still change as airlines and aviation authorities monitor the situation as the advisory period advances.
