The renaming of places in Telangana has already been a point of controversy in the past when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Dharmapuri Arvind said that under their leadership of the state, Nizamabad district would be renamed Indur. According to reports, Arvind, representing Nizamabad in Parliament, said the suggestion would be among the initial resolutions adopted by the general body of Nizamabad Municipal Corporation and later forwarded to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to pass it.

Arvind, who was addressing on Friday, said that BJP was sure to win majority in the forthcoming civic body elections in Nizamabad and lead the municipal administration, including mayor post. He maintained that the original name of the region was Indur and it was renamed because of the political ruling in the Nizam regime. According to the historian, the reinstatement of the old name would lead to revival of the historical identity of the city and contribute to its progress.

The comments of Arvind were also well supported by the Telangana BJP president Ramchander Rao who stated that the party was very much in support of its MP. According to Rao, the BJP had no desire to change the names of places with Nizamabad alone and claimed that there were many places in Telangana with the names of which they continued to be a reminder of the oppression under the Nizam reign. He claimed that such names needed to be changed in order to forget that period in history and to regain native identities.

Nevertheless, the proposal caused a strong response of the Congress. Senior Congress leader and former MP V. Hanumanth Rao leveled the charges of unnecessary controversy by Arvind and claimed that the issue of renaming was not a priority of the people. He has mentioned that Nizamabad could have been called by various names in history, but since Independence, no government had felt the necessity to change its name.

Rao also emphasised on secular origins in India, as the citizens of all religions and communities struggled in the fight to achieve freedom, and cautioned against the use of history as an electoral instrument.
