Shahdol. The sudden increase in demand for khair wood across the country has made it a new smuggling hotspot. In this regard, the Shahdol Forest Department has taken major action and dealt a severe blow to the network involved in the illegal smuggling of khair and teak wood. This action has created panic among the smugglers.
The Forest Department conducted raids against illegal timber smuggling at three different locations in Shahdol district. During a search in the village of Bugra in the Budhar Forest Range, 104 pieces of teak wood, totaling 3.109 cubic meters, were recovered from the garden of Ram Pravesh Yadav. Investigations revealed that the wood had been transported overnight in a pickup vehicle, prompting a forest offense case to be registered.
6 Cubic Meters of Khair and teak wood seized
Teak wood shavings, 5 sacks, 2 pieces of wood, a battery-operated chain-saw machine and 13 chain-saws were seized from the residence of Ashok Kumar Awasthi in Kolmi ward of Byauhari forest range. 130 pieces of teak wood (2.079 cubic meters) were recovered from the dhaba premises of Sunil Awasthi in village of Patdai. Around 5 to 6 cubic meters of Khair and teak wood were seized by raiding the hideouts of Ashok Awasthi and his brother Sunil.
Looting of forest wealth is not tolerated.
DFO Shraddha Pendre stated that the demand for khair wood has become so high that not only the wood but also its bark and roots are being illegally smuggled. In response, the Shahdol Forest Department has initiated continuous monitoring and action under a masterstroke strategy. The Forest Department has made it clear that the plunder of forest resources will not be tolerated at any cost. In the coming days, even stricter action will be taken against the entire smuggling network.
