A former software professional of Tamil Nadu and a mechanic have been arrested in an uncharacteristic high-tech theft case involving a laptop theft racket across Bengaluru and Chennai. The two are said to have stolen laptops in offices in Bengaluru and sold them in open markets in Chennai after wiping all digital evidence to have gone undetected.
The police department of the Bengaluru city recovered 48 stolen laptops in the course of the investigation and have arrested the two suspects within the precincts of the Bengaluru Central Prison. The defendants are M Raja Dorai, 33, a mechanic and D Gautam, 30 a diploma graduate in computer science. They are both living in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu.
The case was revealed last month when an employee of a privately based company based in Doddatoguru which is close to the Electronics City reported a stolen laptop. The footage captured by CCTV cameras showed a man walking out of the office with the laptop in his hand through a half-open main door on a casual basis. The footage helped the police trace the suspect to various places, such as a hotel in Hosur, and then he was traced to Kanchipuram.
In the interrogation, Dorai was said to have confessed to the crime and Gautam was found connected to his technical knowledge in destroying digital traces that contributed to the sale of the laptops without leaving any trace. It was found that the two had a predisposition to search offices that were less vigilant on security and used such opportunities when workers were away without attending to their workstations.
Police authorities have indicated that the case demonstrates an increased level of sophistication in the theft activities occurring in the metropolitan regions whereby age-old techniques are advanced through the use of technological expertise. The police are still on their investigation as to whether they had accomplices or the laptops were sold to the same purchasers in Chennai.
The case highlights the growing concern of firms ensuring their physical and digital security is tightened to curb theft especially in technology intensive cities such as Bengaluru.
