Canada transport regulator has requested Air India to launch an in-depth probe following the ejection of a pilot off an aircraft just prior to take-off at Vancouver international Airport on grounds of him being intoxicated by alcohol according to an individual who is aware of the case.
This accident took place on December 23, when the Air India flight that was planned to fly between Vancouver and Delhi was held at the very last moment. Two breathalyser tests were administered to the pilot by the Canadian police both of which allegedly showed that the pilot was not fit to fly the aircraft. This issue was then reported to the Transport Canada who termed the incident as serious in a formal letter to Air India.
The regulator has stated that it is possible to take up enforcement action depending on results of additional investigation. The source, who spoke on anonymity because he was not authorised to talk to the media, claimed that the Canadian authorities are putting the issue on the first priority due to the implication of safety.
In a formal statement on Saturday, Transport Canada announced that it was going to liaise with Air India and also with the civil aviation regulator in India to see that proper follow-up measures are put in place according to the international aviation safety standards.
The incident was confirmed by Air India who stated that the flight between Canada and Delhi was delayed after the Canadian authorities questioned the fitness of the pilot to work. The airline has indicated that a second pilot has been immediately scheduled to carry out the flight which reduced passenger inconvenience. Nonetheless, the carrier failed to reveal certain information concerning the alcohol test outcome.
The process of enquiry has involved taking off flying duties by the pilot. In its statement, Air India stated that it had a zero-tolerance policy against any breach of the relevant rules and regulations.
