New Delhi: Delhi saw its coldest December day in six years on New Year’s eve. India stepped into the New Year under an intense spell of winter, with large parts of the country witnessing cold wave conditions, dense fog, and sharply dipping temperatures, according to national and regional reports by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). A similar cold wave spell gripped Rajasthan too, and schools were closed in Assam’s Guwahati due to a sharp fall in daytime temperatures.
“As we step into the new year, nature reminds us to move with care. From now until the morning of January 1, 2026, dense to very dense fog is expected across many regions — including East Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and extending to Assam & Meghalaya, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Uttarakhand, West Bengal & Sikkim, West Rajasthan, and West Uttar Pradesh”, wrote IMD on X.
Weather officials noted that such “cold day” conditions occur when both daytime and night-time temperatures remain significantly lower than average, a trend expected to persist into early January, as per IMD. Shallow fog also reduced visibility across several parts of the city during evening hours, affecting travel conditions.
IndiGo on Thursday issued a travel advisory warning passengers of possible delays due to persistent fog over Guwahati, which has slowed flight operations at the airport.
In a statement, the airline said departures and arrivals to and from Guwahati, as well as certain routes across its network, may face short delays as crews work through challenging weather conditions.
IndiGo advised passengers to check the latest flight status on its website or mobile app before heading to the airport to avoid inconvenience.
