The arrest of two men and the discovery of a big consignment of explosive substances in their vehicle on the eve of the New Year in Rajasthan by the Tonk police gave out a major security alert, which was issued by the officials on Wednesday. Based on a certain intelligence tip-off, the District Special Team (DST) intercepted a vehicle in the police station of Baroni and seized approximately 150 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, and it caused serious security concerns.
The suspects have been identified as Surendra Patwa and Surendra Mochi both the locals of the Bundi district in Rajasthan. Mrityunjay Mishra, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, says that the explosives were well-planned because they were well-packaged in sacks of urea fertiliser in order to pass. Preliminary investigations provide the accused to have been carrying the consignment between Bundi and Tonk to supply.
Police also found 200 cartridges and six bundles of safety fuse wire about 1,100 metres long in addition to the ammonium nitrate. The vehicle that was being used in the transportation of the explosives was confiscated during the operation. Authorities claimed that the quick response was made after the credible information was obtained and a potentially serious event was averted before even the New Year celebrations.
DSP Mishra told them that the police are inquiring into the origin of the explosive materials, the destination that they are carrying and the reason as to why they are being carried. The consignment is also under investigation and the accused are under scrutiny to show whether the consignment was intended to be used in illegal activities like illegal mining activities or any other illegitimate uses. There are also inquiries on potential connections with broader criminal groups.
The seizure has acquired a new meaning due to the recent cases on explosives. Ammonium nitrate is a widely used fertiliser, which when mishandled can also be employed as a good explosive, was reportedly used to carry out a blast at the Red Fort at Delhi last month in addition to other high grade materials. At least 12 people were killed and many others were injured in that explosion.
