India’s veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami might have been neglected in the international cricket industry in recent months based on the fears of form and fitness, but reports indicate that he is not in the reckoning at all. As the Indian team will likely shift the emphasis to the ODI cricket after the end of the 2026 T20 World Cup in March, there are more possibilities of the Shami returning to the team.

One of the sources in the BCCI disclosed that the domestic performances of Shami are under close watch and that he may make a comeback to the national team in the nearest future. Mohammed Shami is the topic of discussion. He is not out of reckoning. The only issue is on his fitness. A bowler of that kind will never fail to get wickets. It is not true that he is out of the selection radar. He is in fine form to the New Zealand One-Day series, and there is nothing to be ashamed of in case he is selected. The source even said that the 2027 World Cup is a possibility.

The last time Shami represented India was the Champions Trophy in the beginning of this year where he made nine wickets, including five wickets in the first game. Since, he has not participated in the national setup with several reasons explaining his non-participation. Media reports have indicated that Shami was the contender to the Test tour of England earlier this summer, although there were fitness issues that were reportedly used by the selectors.

His omission in the Test series against the West Indies at home and the white-ball tour of Australia was commented publicly even by Shami himself. The 35-year-old claimed to be in full fitness pointing out that he had played in Ranji Trophy and in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. His comments elicited a reaction on the part of chief selector Ajit Agarkar resulting in a short-term public tussle.
