Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi on Tuesday claimed that tensions between India and Pakistan were among the list of issues “mediated” by Beijing this year. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China had mediated in the India-Pakistan tensions in May. Speaking at an event on the international situation and China’s foreign relations in Beijing, Wang said the world has seen a sharp increase in conflicts and instability. He said local wars and cross-border conflicts have been more frequent this year than ever before. Geopolitical turmoil is constantly increasing.
According to media reports, Wang said that China has adopted a just approach to resolving international conflicts and has focused on addressing both the symptoms and the root causes. Wang further said that to resolve disputed issues, we have mediated in northern Myanmar, Iran’s nuclear issue, tensions between Pakistan and India, issues between Palestine and Israel, as well as the recent conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.
India has always rejected external mediation
Wang’s statement comes in the context of Operation Sindoor, which was carried out by India after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22nd. India has consistently maintained that no third party intervened in the four-day conflict. The ceasefire was achieved through military dialogue between India and Pakistan. In a press conference on May 13th, the Ministry of External Affairs dismissed claims of external mediation.
For the unversed, India and Pakistan were involved in an intense military standoff in May after a terror attack in the Pahalgam valley of Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 killed 26 civilians. India retaliated through Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
