In Bangladesh, a 40-year-old man known as Bajendra Biswas was shot dead in the Mymensingh district, raising new concerns of directed violence against the state after the recent cases in the area. It was reported that the murder occurred in the upazila of Bhaluka, as reported by the news agencies and local media outlets.
According to the police, the accused, Noman Mia was a co-worker to the victim. After the incident, he was arrested soon after. Early searches indicate that the shooting took place after a conflict between the two, although the police is still investigating the actual reason why the crime happened.
Monindra Nath, the acting secretary general of Bangladesh Hindu Buddha Christian Unity Council confirmed that Bajendra Biswas died but said he was very worried by the incident. He stated that the organisation was keenly following up the case and requested the authorities to make sure that an open investigation is conducted and those involved are brought to book.
The murder has attracted attention because it follows closely after another case of violence which was committed on another Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das who is allegedly lynched in another case. The timeliness of both events and incidences has increased the panic of the minority communities and rejuvenated demands to get better protection and prompt justice.
According to local residents, the event in Bhaluka upazila caused panic in the place which led to the deployment of more police. The law enforcers have guaranteed that the situation is within control and that more information will be revealed as the investigation continues.
Policymakers are investigating whether the shooting was due to personal hostility or was a part of the larger trends of violence. Officials also asked the masses not to speculate but leave the investigation on facts.
There have been calls by leaders within the community to ensure that the government does the right things in ensuring that such incidences are prevented and the safety of minority communities is maintained.
