India successfully test-fired the K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) in a stunning demonstration of its nuclear capability. The test was conducted on Tuesday from INS Arighaat, the country’s nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), in the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of Visakhapatnam.
The K-4 missile is capable of hitting targets 3,500 kilometers away. It provides a major strategic boost to India’s sea-based nuclear strike capability. The test, conducted on Tuesday, is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead of up to 2 tons. The K-4 missile is an advanced system based on the land-launched Agni-series missile. It is designed for launch from a submarine. During launch, the missile first emerges from the sea surface and then flies towards the target.
Two days ago, India successfully tested a stealthy submarine-launched ballistic missile. The test took place in the Bay of Bengal. The nuclear-capable K-4 missile was launched from an Arihant-class submarine. No prior announcements were made regarding the test. This test strengthens India’s sea-based nuclear triad, ensuring a second-strike capability. This missile also guarantees retaliation after an enemy first strike.
The K-4 missile’s most distinctive feature is that it is an indigenous K-series missile. Developed by the DRDO, it is specifically designed for the Arihant-class nuclear submarines. Its range is approximately 3,500 km.
The K-4 missile is approximately 12 meters long and 1.3 meters in diameter. It weighs 17-20 tons, with a payload of up to 2 tons. It is capable of underwater launch (cold launch system), 3D maneuvering, and evasion of ballistic missile defense systems.
