The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) managed to raid a city called Bijapur and in the process, apprehended several alleged bribes in the postal department. The raid occurred as the four postal workers were red handed as they received a bribe at an event held at a Taj Hotel on Thursday night at about 8:30 pm.
The CBI team was able to obtain 40,000 in cash at the spot and the accused gave it to them according to sources. Others that have been arrested include Post Office Sub-Division Inspector (SDI) Shastri Kumar Paikara, Maloth Shobhan, Ambedkar Singh and Santosh Andrik. The officials also were accused of having engaged in corrupt activities and had been monitored prior to the actual implementation of the operation.
As a result of the raid, the CBI arrested all the four accused and questioned them. The agency is now questioning them in order to find out the extent of the bribery network and whether there are other officials involved in the case. Early inquiries have indicated that the accused were commanding and accepting illicit satisfaction with regard to official duties involving the postal department.
The incident has thrown shockwaves in the postal department and the city of Bijapur and raised serious concerns on corruption in the public offices. Senior officials are closely observing the situation and more investigations are in progress to find more evidence and other people who have any association with the case.
The CBI is yet to give an official announcement in which the charges are outlined, although a formal case is to be registered under appropriate provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. There are more developments that are anticipated as the probe advances.
