The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has become the newcomer on the frontline in the elections of the Zilla Panchayat of Goa and has taken a lead after the counting process had started on Monday. Reportedly, 15 seats were being won by the BJP, according to trends that were available up to 1: 30 pm. The counting of the votes which started at 8 am is still going on with the high-level security measures throughout the state.
Indian national congress is lagging far behind with the early trends showing it leading in four seats. The Goa Forward Party and the Revolutionary Goans Party have been able to win one seat each among the regional players with independent candidates having won two seats until now. The current trends suggest that there is a divide in the verdict that is more than the BJP is performing.
To the contrary, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is not able to get into the scorecard at the Zilla Panchayat polls, which has been a blow to the party. The election was regarded as one of the most important tests of the AAP strength in Goa after the 2022 Assembly elections, when it acquired two seats and obtained approximately 6.8 percent of the entire share of the vote.
It is being done by the counting process by the State Election Commission which has put six centres in North Goa and eight centres in South Goa. This election was done on Saturday and a turnout of 70.81 percent was witnessed meaning that rural areas had a high turnout.
The elections of Zilla Panchayat witnessed a total of 226 contenders of which 111 were in North Goa and 115 in South Goa. Interestingly, nine current members rejoined the fray, and 12 people who had participated in the last Zilla Panchayat elections in 2020.
The 25 single-member constituencies of each of the two Zilla Panchayats of Goa make the total of 50 seats in the two Zillas.
