A Congress MP, Imran Masood, sharply criticised the central government led by the BJP when it directed senior congress leader Sonia Gandhi to hand over 51 cartons of documents on the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, to the Prime Ministers Museum and library (PMML). The need has also stirred the old political controversy again between the ruling party and the Congress regarding the ownership and possession of the Nehru papers.
In a poke at the government, Masood claimed that this government was too preoccupied with Nehru when critical issues of the country were at stake. Citing increasing air pollution in Delhi and the rest of the north India, and the depreciating rupee, he declared that the government had little to offer in the lives of people. They are left with nothing but Nehru. He even appears in their dreams. Breathing is not easy in Delhi, the rupee is losing against the dollar and the economy is not doing well but these are not the issues that worry them, said Masood.
The Nehru papers are a sensitive matter that has long been used over years by both sides the BJP and the Congress to engage in political sparring. One part of the PMML has been arguing in support of the reclaiming the documents, which was appropriated by Sonia Gandhi a couple of years ago. The papers are deemed as being of historical value, in that they contain letters and memoirs of Nehru and his life.
After the demise of Nehru, the Teen Murti Bhawan where he spent 16 years as his official residence was turned into the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML). The institution emerged as a huge depository of historical documents, rare records, and books on the freedom movement in India and history after independence. In 2023 the NMML was changed to the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library.
