The Opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, on Friday (December 12, 2025), placed the crisis of increasing air pollution on the agenda of the Lok Sabha and called upon the House to constructively and solution-oriented debate on the issue. The speaker of Zero Hour, Gandhi highlighted that the issue of poisonous air in the big cities of India is not a political or ideological question but a question of people health, which can be addressed only through the collective effort.
He urged the government and Opposition to engage in the discussion in a cooperative instead of an adversarial spirit. It is not a matter of ideology. The damage that air pollution is causing to our people would be an issue that everybody in this House would concur, and can we work together on, said Gandhi. He further said after the discussion has been held, the Prime Minister would take the lead with the comprehensive national plan on fighting air pollution.
In reply to Gandhi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju indicated that the government was willing to discuss this but the issue can be discussed any time the Business Advisory Committee of the Lok Sabha finds time.
Gandhi emphasized on the dire health consequences of the deteriorating quality of air, noting that millions of people in the nation, particularly children and the aged, are falling victim. The air in most of our great cities is blanketing in poison. Lung disease is becoming common to millions of children. Their future is being ruined. People are getting cancer. Aged individuals are finding it hard to breathe, he observed.
He cautioned that the crisis, which went unchecked, would have far-reaching implications on Indian citizens in terms of health, output and general development. Gandhi asked the House to consider air pollution as a national crisis and take prompt and science-based action.
