New Delhi: Police presented three accused in the anti-pollution India Gate protest case before the Patiala House Court. During the hearing, the police stated that the protest was organized without permission. Following this, the court remanded accused Ravjot, Gurkirat, and Kranti to three days of police custody and directed that female officers interrogate the female accused. Accused Ayesha Wafia was also remanded to judicial custody for three days. Delhi Police had requested 10 days of custody for these four.
The remaining eight accused in the case were remanded to judicial custody for seven days. The accused’s lawyer argued that the police had sufficient time to question the students and that no concrete evidence had been found against them so far.
The Delhi Police claimed in court on Monday that students planned the clashes during the anti-pollution protest at India Gate on November 23 through five WhatsApp groups. Messages supporting Naxalite commander Madvi Hidma were also shared in these groups. Police stated that all the accused students were members of these groups, and some were even admins. These included Coordination Group for Protest 23, DU Against Air Pollution, SFS Air Pollution Protest, BSCEEM, and Himberg Announcement. In one chat, when someone asked why the anti-pollution protest turned into support for Hidma, the response was, “Hidma and his comrades were protecting the environment, so their issue is also our issue.”
The lawyer for the accused stated that they wanted to question the students. It’s worth noting that these students were already out on bail in a similar case registered at the Parliament Street police station. Following the hearing, the court remanded the three men to three days of police custody and Ayesha Wafia to three days of judicial custody. The lawyer stated that efforts would be made to secure bail for the students at the next hearing.
The investigation is ongoing to determine whether there was a larger conspiracy behind the India Gate protest, who was supporting these sisters, and whether it was simply a spontaneous protest or whether an organized network was behind it. Police will now interrogate the accused in custody regarding these questions. Furthermore, the connection between the accused and the banned organization RSU is also being investigated.
