China: Authorities in the Wuhan Province on Tuesday called for mass testing; to screen its entire population for Covid-19 after the central Chinese city where the coronavirus emerged reported its first local infections in more than a year.
Senior Wuhan official Li Tao addressing a press conference on Tuesday said,” the city of 11 million is “swiftly launching comprehensive nucleic acid testing of all residents.”
As per the statistics observed on Monday, seven locally transmitted infections had been found among migrant workers in the city, quashing the year-long interim relief the province had got from the novel virus.
On Tuesday, nearly 61 domestic cases were reported. The eastern city of Yangzhou, near Nanjing, recently ordered their residents to stay home after large-scale testing detected 40 new infections in the last 24 hours.
On Monday, House Republican lawmaker, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the third installment in his investigation into the origins of the virus and the missteps by China in alerting the world to the risks of the pandemic.
Alongside the statement, he had also urged Congress to pass legislation sanctioning scientists at the Wuhan lab and Chinese Communist Party officials who were determined to have obstructed efforts to respond to the pandemic quickly and effectively.
