World: Chinese scientist at the Wuhan Institute of Virology deny the genesis of the pandemic from their lab. After a conversation built as the US Scientists and politicians demanded a re-probe into the lab leak theory.
Shi Zhengli, a prominent Chinese Virologist takes a stand at the centre of clashing narratives about her research on coronavirus at the state lab in Wuhan, the city where the pandemic first originated.
“How on earth can I offer up evidence for something where there is no evidence?” Dr Shi Zhengli told the media in her comments. “I don’t know how the world has come to this, constantly pouring filth on an innocent scientist,” she added.
The leak hypothesis has been circulating after several scientists claim the virus leaked from the lab and that the probe conducted earlier was shunned by others for its connection with former President Donald J Trump. Fresh scrutiny from the Biden administration called for greater candour from prominent scientists into the lab leak theory.
The bat scientist has been heavily targeted with comments from several scientists stating that it was a deliberate event. While others want clarity on reports, citing American intelligence, suggesting that there were early infections of Covid-19 among several employees of the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
In a rare interview over email, Shi Zengli denounced the suspicions as baseless, including the allegations that several of her colleagues may have been ill before the outbreak emerged.
