World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5th to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our planet. The first World Environment Day was observed in 1973, with the slogan “Only One Earth.” This year, the theme of World Environment Day 2023 is “Beat Plastic Pollution.”
An important environmental hazard is plastic pollution. Plastic garbage is dumped into our rivers, seas, and landfills yearly. This plastic can kill animals, contaminate water, and accelerate climate change.
We have a lot of options for reducing plastic pollution. We may avoid single-use plastics, recycle plastic wherever we can, and buy goods made of eco-friendly materials. We can assist companies who are attempting to lessen their use of plastic.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has started a brand-new initiative called “Beat Plastic Pollution.” The campaign’s goals include educating the public about the issue of plastic pollution and motivating people, organizations, and governments to take action to stop it.
Plastic straws, bags, and other single-use items, along with plastic cutlery, have been suggested for prohibition by the European Union. The prohibition is anticipated to go into effect in 2021.
The selling of plastic bottles has been outlawed in San Francisco. In 2020, the prohibition was anticipated to take effect. These are just a few instances of the strides in the fight against plastic pollution. We can contribute to preserving our world if we keep up our efforts.
