New Delhi: On the second day of the Outreach Session of the G7 Summit, PM Modi emphasized India’s commitment to democracy, freedom of thought and liberty.
Venturing into two sectors, ‘Building Back Together—Open Societies and Economies’ and ‘Building Back Greener: Climate and Nature’, PM Modi spoke as a lead speaker in the session on Open Societies.
Expressing concern over the vulnerability of open societies to disinformation and cyber-attacks, he stressed the need to establish that cyberspace remains a domain for advancing democratic values and not of subverting them.
In the outreach session on climate change, he stated that the planet’s atmosphere, biodiversity and oceans cannot be protected by countries acting solely and called for collective action on climate change. He updated the G7 about India answering commitments to climate action, he mentioned the commitment by Indian Railways to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2030. He stressed that India is the only G-20 country on track to meet its Paris commitments.
Additionally, he highlighted the two effective global initiatives fostered by the nation, i.e. the CDRI and the International Solar Alliance. Taking into account the financial drawbacks of developing countries, he urged better access for climate finance and proposed a holistic approach towards climate change that covers all dimensions of the problem- mitigation, adaptation, technology transfer, climate financing, equity, climate justice and lifestyle change.
This was for the first time that it engaged in ministerial and working-level tracks as a guest country in the G7 Summit.
