The Cuban government has accused the US government that a recent military action in Venezuela by the US military killed 32 Cuban officers during the weekend, and this has heightened the scenario of the military operation in Venezuela. Havana in their statement aired on Cuban state television late Sunday claimed that the dead were Cuban military and police personnel who had been sent to Venezuela on an invitation by the Venezuelan government.

The Cuban staff, as per the statement, were on a special mission that was approved by Caracas, but the kind of task they had been assigned to do in the South American nation has not been revealed. As a long-time political and strategic partner of Venezuela, Cuba has been known to have offered military, intelligence, and police support to help the Venezuelan government in a number of years.

US President Donald Trump, in his remarks to reporters aboard the Air Force One on Sunday evening on his way back to Washington after visiting Florida, admitted the incidence and that there was a lot of death on the other side, including Cuban nationalities. He further said that no American soldier was lost in the mission. The international media reported on his comments and this contributed to international awareness on the strike.

The Cuban government declared two days of national mourning as a way of honouring the fallen officers in reaction to the reported deaths. The relocation is a way of showing seriousness with which Havana perceives the incident and suggests possible diplomatic consequences.

In the meantime, there are reports of a considerably large increase in the number of people killed as a result of the US strike on Saturday in Venezuela. A news agency had quoted a senior Venezuelan official saying at least 80 people have been killed so far with the number set to rise as more information comes out. A significant section of the security team of President Nicolas Maduro was one of those killed in the attack according to the statements earlier made by the Defence Minister of Venezuela, Vladimir Padrino.
