Tahawwur Rana extradition: Tahawwur Rana, convicted of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack, will be brought to India. The US Supreme Court today (Saturday) approved the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, convicted of the 26/11 Mumbai attack. India has been demanding the extradition of Pakistani-origin Canadian citizen Tahawwur Rana for a long time.

In August 2024, the US court had ordered Rana to be sent to India under the India-US extradition treaty. The lower court had cleared the way for the extradition of Tahawwur Rana in September last year itself.

On December 16, US Solicitor General Elizabeth B Prelogar urged the Supreme to reject the petition. Rana’s counsel Joshua L Dratel, in his response on December 23 challenged the US Government’s recommendation and pleaded with the Supreme Court that his writ be accepted.

But Rana challenged the lower court’s decision in the Supreme Court. But the decision came on Friday, soon after Trump became president. The US Supreme Court upheld the lower court’s decision and approved his extradition to India. So now Tahawwur Rana, convicted of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack, will be brought to India.

It is worth noting that Rana is accused of helping David Headley. He had helped the mastermind of this attack, David Coleman Headley, in the recce of targets in Mumbai. India had presented strong evidence of recce of targets in the 26/11 attack in the US court. He was arrested from Chicago in 2009. He has also been accused of being associated with ISI and Lashkar-e-Taiba. Apart from this, he has been described as an operative of Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI and terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba.
