Washington: Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has appealed to the lawmakers of the Congress to resume a joint session to consider the election result on Wednesday.

Calling the US Capitol siege a shameful assault on the country’s democracy, Nancy Pelosi said that this will not deter the authorities from their responsibility towards the Constitution. Speaking further she said that the lawmakers would return for the joint session of the Congress on Wednesday night once it is cleared by the security for users.

“Today, a shameful assault was made on our democracy. It was anointed at the highest level of government. It cannot, however, deter us from our responsibility to validate the election of Joe Biden”, tweeted Pelosi.

The House of Representatives voted 282-138 against an attempt to overturn Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania. The US House of Representatives on Wednesday night joined the Senate in rejecting a move by allies of President Donald Trump to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in Arizona, a vote delayed by rioters earlier pushing their way into the US Capitol.

It is noteworthy that, earlier, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said “Congress’ certifying of Biden’s win will show the world it won’t back down”. Pelosi made these comments as the House reconvened after being shut down by unruly pro-Trump protesters at US Capitol.
