On Tuesday, the United States conducted a significant military attack on Iranian missile installations in or near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, with powerful 5,000-pound accuracy-enhancing bombs known as the so-called bunker busters to destroy deep underground targets. The US central command confirmed that several deep-penetrated munitions were successfully employed in hardened Iran missile positions along the Iran coast which Washington termed as a menace to international shipping in the area.

The strikes are being made as tensions between the US and Iran continue to grow, and a key point of conflict is the Strait of Hormuz. It is also among the most crucial routes in the world which has a carrying capacity of almost 20 percent of the global oil reserves. The recent activities of Iran to block transit via strait has been a major concern of global energy security as well as disruptions of supply.

Speaker of Iranian Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warned Iran that things would not get back to normal in the strait, which is an indication of a protracted spell of unrest. In the meantime, the Iranian leaders reported to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEE) that a projectile had hit the Bushehr nuclear power plant. Luckily, there were no reported damages or injuries.

Director General of IAEA Rafael Grossi called upon the parties to engage in utmost restraint to ensure that the situation does not escalate any more, especially with the dangers of having nuclear infrastructure. The state of affairs is constantly changing, and the world superpowers keep a close watch on what is happening in this area.
