The United States government partially went into a shutdown on Saturday because Congress did not approve a budget for the fiscal year 2026 before the midnight funding deadline, which led to a temporary shutdown in federal funds. Even following the chaos, legislators said the shutdown could be short-lived, and the House of Representatives will consider an agreement approved by the Senate to provide funding early next week.
As per the officials who knew about the negotiations, the talks collapsed after the killing of two protesters in Minneapolis by federal immigration agents was met with fierce opposition by the Democrats. The incident allegedly killed negotiations on new funding allocations towards the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as it became a significant point of conflict as time ran out. As no consensus was reached in a timely manner, several non-essential government functions were brought to a halt up of funding.
Due to this, several federal services will go on hiatus until Congress passes a short-term stopgap bill or a full-year spending bill. Both sides of congressional leaders are making back-room calls to amass sufficient backing so as to guarantee the Senate-supported deal passes the House once the legislators re-emerge in Washington.
This is the second partial closure in the last year and is only 11 weeks following the last funding crisis. The previous impasse took 43 days and was the longest government shutdown in the history of the US, and a sign of current fiscal and political rifts within Congress.
The recent shutdown is, however, smaller. Some of the key federal departments already have full-year funding to the expiry of the fiscal year on September 30. They are the Department of Agriculture, making sure that there is no interruption of food assistance programmes like food stamps. The other key services, such as national parks, services to the veterans and the Justice Department, will also be expected to be in operation, and therefore the immediate effect on the population has been lessened.
