Washington: As the world awaits for the outcome of the White House race between President Donald Trump and Joe Biden, election officials in key states were trying to expedite the counting of votes. Final results are still awaited in Nevada, Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. However, Former vice-president Joe Biden has collected 264 electoral votes, making him the favourite to become the next president.
According to AP count, so far Biden has secured 264 electoral votes and he just needs to win Nevada to reach the magic figure of 270. Trump, on the other hands, needs to win Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia and Nevada all to win his re-election bid.
Even though Biden is just one win away from claiming the Presidency, it could take a little longer to be sure about who will sit in the White House, considering President Trump’s lawsuits against three states and a recounting request in Wisconsin.
As per the recent counting, Joe Biden now has more votes than any presidential candidate in US history at a little over 72 million. This has surpassed Barack Obama’s 2008 record who polled 69 million votes.
In a sign that of how hotly-contested this election was, Trump, too, could go past Obama’s record, with his current tally standing at 68.5 million.
In 2016, Trump had polled 62.9 million votes to Hillary Clinton’s 65.8 million votes. Trump was elected basis higher Electoral College seats.
