The Trump administration has also unveiled a massive arms sales package to Taiwan worth more than $10 billion a step that is likely to intensify conflict with China. The one unveiled by the U.S. State Department late on Wednesday comprises medium-range missiles, howitzers, drones, and other military equipment, which is one of the biggest military deals with Taiwan in the recent years. The statement was accompanied by an address shown nationally in which President Donald Trump does not specifically mention China or Taiwan in his speech.
The arms sales are divided into eight agreements of a large scope of military equipment. Among them are 82 High-Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), 420 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), which are analogous to the ones that have been provided to Ukraine before, under the Biden administration. The deal also includes 60 self-propelled howitzer systems worth over four billion dollars, drones priced in the excess of one billion dollars, military software worth more than one billion dollars and other features, such as Javelin and TOW missiles, helicopter parts, and refurbishment packages on Harpoon missiles.
As indicated by the State Department, the sales are meant to fulfill U.S national, economic and security interests. The statement underlined that the proposed sales will enhance the security of Taiwan, the political stability in the region, the balance of the military, and the economic development.
Under the federal law, the U.S. has a legal obligation to help Taiwan in self-defense, an issue with China. Beijing has on a number of occasions pledged to reclaim Taiwan by all possible means and it denounced the arms sales to be provocative. This announcement is also based on the act of the U.S. Congress that is called the National Defense Authorization Act that Trump is likely to sign that will imply additional military assistance to Taiwan.
