The aircraft belonged to the Thunderbirds Squadron, which operates out of Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas and is known worldwide for its air shows and dangerous stunts. The Thunderbirds team reported that the pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft during a training mission. The pilot suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized.
The accident occurred at around 12:30 a.m. Indian time in a desert area near the city of Trona in Southern California. The plane went down about three kilometers from the Trona Airport. The airport manager said military aircraft frequently fly over this area.
The pilot is in stable condition and is being treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department. The F-16C Fighting Falcon crashed around 10:45am on Wednesday while performing a training mission “over controlled airspace in California,” informed Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.
The San Bernardino Fire Department, in a statement, said that they responded to an “aircraft emergency” near Trona, in the Mojave Desert about 180 miles north of Los Angeles. It remains unclear what actually caused the crash.
According to officials, six Thunderbirds took off for jet training that morning, but only five returned. Preliminary information suggests the plane crashed near the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station, an area frequently used for military training. The F-16 Fighting Falcon plays a key role in the Thunderbirds’ air shows and training missions. The Air Force’s 57th Wing Public Affairs Office said the accident is under investigation and more information will be released once the crash site is fully inspected.
