US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a surprise trip to Iraq as part of his Middle East tour aimed at easing tensions following the conflict between Israel and Hamas. This visit marks Blinkens’ time in Iraq since assuming his role as Secretary of State. While in Baghdad he engaged in discussions with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al Sudani.

The United States is actively involved in initiatives to prevent a regional conflict, particularly in areas where public sentiment has been heightened due to Israel’s actions in Gaza. Blinkens visit to Iraq is a component of these efforts.

Upon arriving in Baghdad Blinken took safety precautions by wearing a vest and utilising a Black Hawk helicopter for transportation within the Green Zone—a remnant from the US occupation after the 2003 invasion. At the US ambassador’s residence he received briefings on security concerns regarding facilities prior to meeting with the prime minister.

Later on Sunday Blinken is set to travel to Turkey amidst protests. It is noteworthy that Kataib Hezbollah—an Iran backed group—issued a warning of Blinkens visit hinting at escalation unlike any seen before.

Lately there has been a rise in rocket and drone assaults targeting US and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria. US defence officials believe this increase is linked to a surge in attacks that followed the actions of Hamas on October 7. These actions prompted a response from Israel, in Gaza.
