United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the military authorities of Myanmar to cease the atrocious violence and killings that they have inflicted on the people since the 2021 coup and to give a credible way back to the civilian regime. Addressing a press conference on the outskirts of the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, Guterres was very much concerned with the current state of political and humanitarian crises in Myanmar and declared that the crisis still poses a threat to the stability of the region.

“The military coup has heaped disaster after disaster on Myanmar,” Guterres said. “I repeat my plea to put an end to violence and to be genuinely committed to inclusive dialogue and a credible road to civilian rule.”

Since the military overthrew the democratically elected government chaired by Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021, Myanmar has been a mess. The coup caused massive demonstrations, a bloody military crackdown, and armed resistance that today dominates most parts of the nation. Under the leadership of Min Aung Hlaing, the junta has made a declaration that it will conduct a general election, and this has been discounted by observers and critics as a move to legitimize further military governance. Opposition parties have been dissolved in many cases, rebels have not been willing to take part, and thus, the chances of having a fair and inclusive election are increasingly becoming questionable.

Guterres highlighted that the future of Myanmar would be built upon the restoration of democratic institutions, which are based on the rule of law and considerations of human rights. He further gave a fresh endorsement of the ASEAN peace plan of 2021, which demanded a cessation of hostilities and establishment of political dialogue- a plan that the junta has not paid much attention to.

Guterres called on the world to open humanitarian pathways, stop the violence, and enable a holistic political resolution. “The Myanmar people are relying on our solidarity.”
