As reported by the Ukrainian Air Force, Ukraine’s air defence forces shot down 110 out of 177 drones that were launched by Russia during a massive overnight attack on Wednesday. The military called it one of the biggest drone offensives in recent months to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defences. In addition to the 110 drones that were brought down, the statement indicated that another 66 drones were ‘lost’, a term usually employed to explain how the drones were neutralized through electronic warfare.

Such measures, which include jamming or taking over the control of the enemy drones, may have guided them away from their intended paths. One drone was unaccounted for, but it was not mentioned in the report. The overnight attack was spread across various regions of Ukraine, with Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa being some of the regions that were targeted.

Baltimore and Kharkiv also had their share of challenges as Ukraine’s air defences, with the help of Patriots and NASAMS supplied by the West, intercepted a large part of the drone swarm before it could cause a lot of destruction. Despite the effective protection provided by Ukraine, some drones were reported to have penetrated the air defense barriers and caused damage to property and injuries to people.

The effects of the attack have not yet been fully determined by Ukrainian authorities. The use of drones in the conflict has been on the increase to show that Russia has not forgotten its use of unmanned aerial vehicles to put pressure on Ukraine and its military as well as disrupt society’s fabric. On the other hand, Ukrainian armies have not been sitting with their arms folded; they have also improved their kinetic and electronic warfare to prevent such threats.
